LA QUINTA, Calif. — Lynn Lim capped a strong week in California with a third-place finish, closing the Yale Invitational West with a 1-under 71 on Tuesday to go 9-under for the tournament. Vanderbilt finished fifth as a team at 2-over for the week.
“Definitely not the result we were looking for, but it shows us what we need to work on and get better at before we head to Colonial and into the postseason,” head coach Greg Allen said. “We find a way to give too many shots away – especially routine chips and lag putting late in rounds that lead to bogeys. We’ve got to take better ownership in knowing how important each shot is.”
Lim’s final round card included four birdies on Tuesday. She finished the 54-hole invitational with 16 birdies and an eagle. Lim also led the tournament in par 3 scoring, averaging 2.75 strokes, and par 5 scoring at 4.42 strokes.
“This was a really good tournament for Lynn and another learning opportunity for her today,” said Allen. “She keeps knocking on that door and sooner or later she’s going to get a win.”
Tillie Claggett closed the week in California with an even-par 72 to finish at par for the tournament as well. Claggett earned a top 20 finish, her second of the season. Freshman Angelina Tolentino carded a 1-over 73 and Charlene Chung a 2-over 74 to round out the scoring on Tuesday.
“I thought Angelina and Charlene played well today and showed a lot of heart to bounce back with three birdies each after making doubles,” said Allen. “Tillie also continues to make strides. She’s really close to busting out and playing really good golf like we’re used to seeing.”
Sara Im finished 11-over and Claire Henson, playing as an individual, closed with an 8-over round. North Carolina won the invitational with a 31-under team total. Kansas finished second at 20-under.
“We will spend the remaining part of spring break taking a very much needed rest before heading to Fort Worth in 11 days,” said Allen.
Vanderbilt returns to action March 24-25 at the Charles Schwab Women’s Collegiate Invitational at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
